During the month of October 2014 KLM operated its last commercial flight with the MD11 flying from Montreal to Amsterdam Schiphol airport (Flight 672 - 26th October). KL672 flown by an MD-11 named "Audrey Hepburn" received a water-cannon salute when it arrived to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport at around 6:35 a.m. local time, thus ending the Douglas Commercial era with KLM.
In order to celebrate the Tri-jet official retirement, KLM organized 3 pleasure flights from Schiphol on the 11th November at a celebration price of 111 euro's. The tickets could be booked online and where sold out within 10 minutes. Thankfully the weather turned out fine and both MD-11 PH-KCD and sistership PH-KCB were parked on the remote freight ramp to receive there excited VIPs and passengers.
Passengers had to report at Departures building 1 (check-in gate 6) and during the short wait they received a KLM goody bag, which contained the excellent KLM MD11 Farewell book. In between both MD11s the DDA Classic Airlines Douglas DC-3 PH-PBA was on display in order to represent the Douglas propliner era with KLM. After the flight all passengers had plenty of time to photograph all aircraft on the ramp with a lengthy walk about. The first flight took off at 10.30 and lasted for about an hour and the passengers were treated to a low altitude (2000 ft) sightseeing flight over Holland. The other flights were planned at 13.30 and 15.30 local time. Both MD11 carried special markings and stickers, depicting the Douglas Propliner era and MD logo.
After the last flight PH-KCD 'Florence Nightingale' landed on runway 24-06, she taxied onto the Romeo freight ramp and formated behind the DC-3. Together they taxied around Schiphol airport with a large group of yellow Airport Authority vehicles in hot pursuit. Numerous photographed were given the opportunity to ride along and capture several historic moment. As the sun was sinking fast behind the horizon the formation arrived back again on the freight ramp, where 'Florence Nightingale' was giving an official water shower salute…thus ending her final passenger flight ever!
